Blanket

 Blanket

White wooden shutters,
unfolded, latched, covering
the lower window,

let the sunlight in.
Peering out, I see your face,
but you can't see me.

Though we are so close,
I can hear only the wind.
You knock at the door.

Afraid now, to speak,
I pretend not to hear it.
"I will hide," I think,

Knowing that if I
open my mouth out will come
many stupid things.

I don't want to feel
the sour, sickening regret
of playing the fool.

I know how to act,
but cannot seem to do it.
Believe me, I've tried

It happens again,
and again, and again, but
this time, I will wait.

I will be rescued...
I hear a helicopter
flying overhead.
